Novel Ultrasound Technology for NDT/NDI
of Composites Background Elop-DolphiScan AS, a Norwegian SBE, has developed a Hand Held Ultrasound Imager for reading painted (covered), and discoloured symbols. The transducer technology is very flexible and typical 16000 transducer/receiver elements with 10 Images / sec. is used in the LOCUS reader. Over the last years we have also worked on High Resolution Transducers for 3 Dimensional analyzes of Skin diseases.As the newest generation of composites-intensive aircrafts comes online, NDT of composites will assume unprecedented importance in manufacture and maintenance/repair. Aerospace industry users will need increased Ultrasound system utility, sensitivity, accuracy and speed. Transducer size and frequency are important as the industry is moving away from single element transducers towards Phased Array for more effective scanning. Our multi-element transducer for C-scan or B-scan with digital visual representation of the subsurface, reduce the need for user interpretation and increase the efficiency even further. Ultrasound technique is able to detect relevant defects in composite.

the technology, developments and industrialization as described, A portable instrument with High Resolution - Volumetric Images for in-depth analyzes of materials and quality control in production and repair. Features - High Energy focusing with multi element matrix transducer. - Transducer based on co-polymer - Main processing with 2 FPGA, for transmit beam forming and receive processing. - Modularity of electronics for optimal numbers of TX and RX channels. - Easy access in narrow spaces with optional cable connection of transducer head. - Very performance and price competitive. - Dry coupling or Air coupled. 2 D and 3D Imaging, Image quality, user friendly (lack of trained personnel) and advanced Image processing are the answer to the future call for greater sophistication and user friendly NDT ultrasonic devices. A non-contact ultrasonic Matrix transducer where air is the only coupling medium in combination with Hand Held operation, will expand the capability of ultrasonic equipments and allow for very effective scanning and cover large areas with easier interpretation.
